Routine With Positive Habits = Less Stress = Improved Immune System!

That’s the formula for a healthy and happy life, right? Now, some of you are probably thinking, “Easier said than done” or “I don’t think the math works on that.” Well, I’m here to tell you different!

For the past few weeks, we’ve been sharing with you tips and insights on how to bolster your immune system in these trying times. We’ve touched on Magnesium and its importance, and also a delved into sleep and the impact it has on our bodies. This week we’re going to look at how to reduce stress in our lives and how positive routines and habits can help.

At any given point in a day, we can be thinking of a myriad of different things that either need to be taken care of or worry about. What we may not realize is what worrying about things actually does to our body. Stress can be viewed in two ways, eustress and distress. Eustress is a positive form of stress that normally has the following characteristics:

  • Motivates, focuses energy.
  • Is short-term.
  • Is perceived as within our coping abilities.
  • Feels exciting.
  • Improves performance.

In contrast, distress has the following characteristics:

  • Causes anxiety or concern.
  • Can be short- or long-term.
  • Is perceived as outside of our coping abilities.
  • Feels unpleasant.
  • Decreases performance.
  • Can lead to mental and physical problems.

I’ll give you a hint to what worrying about everything is considered…(DISTRESS!!!) Fear not, for there are ways to combat this foul form of stress!

Routines created around positive habits can help combat this negative effect on our bodies. Now, these don’t need to be complex or difficult to be effective. They can be as simple as the following:

  • Eating healthier foods as a whole (maybe introducing a new one every week)
  • Going to bed at a decent hour to promote a full night’s rest (read the previous posts for great tips on that!!)
  • Journaling or free writing for 5-10min a day to get the clutter out of your head
  • Creating a schedule or using a planner to set up time for things that are important to you outside of work (kids, walks, date night, movie night, etc.)
  • Getting some form of exercise in… maybe in the form of classes with us…(hint hint)
  • Doing something that just makes you smile or laugh

These types of routines and habits can cause eustress in our life, which in turn will bolster our immune system. By doing so we increase the body's resistance to colds and other infections, promote better sleep, improve digestion, and help us just enjoy our lives that much more.

So, in the words of Bob Marley, “Don’t worry, be happy.” And enjoy those new routines!
