Meet Geremy M
Geremy joined our family shortly after we opened our doors but he has been close to Coach Stephanie and I for a few years now. Geremy was a member at CrossFit Eternal, where I found CrossFit. About a year later, Stephanie became a coach there and its thanks to her that he is a part of our community! Having Geremy around is a true joy. Whether he is sticking around after the 5:00 AM class to cheer on our 6 AM'ers or participating in our community events... you can always guarantee that he will be making people laugh and smile! Thank you Geremy for being such an awesome dude!
As part of being Athlete of the Month, we asked Geremy a few questions to get to know him a little more, below are his answers:
1. Where are you from?
I'm the weirdo that's actually from Charlotte. I grew up in South Charlotte, back before Ballantyne and Carolina Place Mall were a thing. However, I went to school in Tennessee, where I met the lovely Christy Meyers, and then later Atlanta (side note, we've got no business complaining about traffic). We moved back to the area in 2006, then boom, 4 kids later here we are. Now we live in Cedarfield off of Gilead Rd. and love it.
2. What do you do for a living?
I'm a sales engineering manager for a software company (so basically I'm a nerd at heart). I've got 9 engineers who are located anywhere from Philadelphia to Miami, so I'm on a plane a lot. When I travel, I like to drop into a local CrossFit gym where I get to meet some pretty interesting people. Fun fact. I've dropped into 53 different boxes and counting. I highly recommend dropping in when you travel.
3. What are your favorite hobbies?
My current phase in life doesn't leave much time for hobbies. I love being a husband and a dad to 4 kids. However, I've gotten back into vinyl records over the past year. When I look at my collection, I realize I've got a whole lot of classic rock. My favorite is still U2's Joshua Tree.
4. What is your athletic background?
Growing up, I always played sports. Soccer, baseball, football, basketball, it didn't matter. My parents kept my brother and I busy and my dad was usually coaching. I was in the very athletic sounding marching band in high school, and later played all kinds of intramural sports in college. Then I graduated. And got a job. And travelled. And ate a lot of crappy food. And then put on some weight. At one point I was up to 215. However, about 10 years ago, I got back on the wagon, lost 30 pounds and never looked back. I found Crossfit almost 6 years ago and love it.
5. What made you choose CrossFit 926?
I knew Jake and Steph from a previous fitness life, so when I found out they were going to be coaching it up 8 minutes from my house, I was in.
6. What is your favorite movement that we do here at CrossFit 926?
I love to snatch. It's one of the most challenging yet satisfying movements we do in Crossfit. When I miss a lift, it's like a complete dumpster fire, but when it goes right it's such a beautiful thing. Also, you didn't ask, but I feel compelled to tell you I hate thrusters and burpees. There I said it.
7. What is your favorite thing about CrossFit 926?
I supposed to tell you it's because the coaching is so great (which, by the way, it really is. The coaching at 926 is phenomenal, and I've seen a lot of coaching across all 53 of those boxes) but I really do love the community. The 5:00 AM crew is fantastic. What a great way to start the day! However, I also really enjoy dropping into the noon and evening classes occasionally to meet new people and sweat with my later-in-the-day peeps.
8. What advice would you give a new-comer to CrossFit 926?
Just be consistent. It can seem intimidating at first, but don't worry about what everyone else is doing. The only person you have to beat is the you from yesterday. So show up and put the work in, and stick with it. You'll see results. You've got an entire community cheering you on.
